Fire extinguishers must be pressure tested through a process known as hydrostatic testing after a specified number of years to ensure the cylinder remains safe and reliable. Testing intervals vary by extinguisher type, so always consult the owner’s manual, extinguisher label, or manufacturer’s guidelines to determine when testing is required.

If a fire extinguisher shows any signs of damage or requires recharging, it must be replaced or serviced immediately to remain compliant and safe.

IMPORTANT:

All fire extinguishers must be recharged immediately after any use, regardless of how little agent was discharged.

Inspection vs. Maintenance: What’s the Difference?

Inspection

An inspection is a quick visual check designed to confirm that a fire extinguisher is:

• Present and accessible
• Fully charged
• In proper operating condition

The effectiveness of inspections depends on their frequency, consistency, and thoroughness. Depending on the environment, inspections may be conducted hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly, but should always occur:

• When extinguishers are first placed in service
• At approximately 30-day intervals thereafter

Maintenance

Maintenance is a comprehensive, hands-on evaluation performed at least once per year, or whenever an inspection indicates a potential issue. This process provides maximum assurance that the extinguisher will operate safely and effectively in an emergency.

Maintenance includes:

• Detailed internal and external examination
• Necessary repairs or parts replacement
• Recharging when required
• Identification of the need for hydrostatic testing
